Regarding the letter, “Wrong to value lions over people”: The letter about the amount of newspaper coverage devoted to Cecil the lion is misguided at best, and completely uninformed. In our horror and protests about Cecil the lion of Zimbabwe, we are very troubled by this Minnesota dentist’s arrogant and entitled behavior toward this endangered animal that was baited, poached, injured by the poacher’s inept shot and left in torture for 40 hours, then finally killed, beheaded, skinned and then totally left to rot. That is the issue we are concerned with right now. The insinuation that we are “valuing lions over people” is way out of line, and totally incorrect.
However, the slaughter of an endangered, protected, beloved, tracked, and “safe in his reserve” wild animal by baiting it with a dead animal, is, in my opinion, evil and morally wrong. There is no connection between horror about this action and the writer’s assumption about humans and their issues. Bill Gates benefits humans all over the world; in my opinion we have too many humans at this point, and birth control works. But then again … that is an entirely different subject; see?
What of the wonderful article I just read, about the very kind police officer who rescued a skunk by removing the yogurt cup that was stuck on his head; does he value this skunk over humans? We are not “comparing” or “valuing” any form of life over any other. We are horrified at the death of an endangered species member, which is on the brink of extinction. Please read all about Cecil the lion and what he was subjected to, and then maybe the writer can understand where we are coming from.
