It will be safer for students who walk and bike to Sherwood-area schools in Edmonds once a new sidewalk goes in on 238th Street SW.
A contract was awarded Aug. 4 to Taylor’s Excavators Inc. of Stanwood with a bid of $1.18 million. Crews will soon start constructing walkway and drainage improvements on 238th Street SW, from 104th Avenue W to 100th Avenue W. That’s just south of the Edmonds Heights K-12 campus, and within a mile of Sherwood Elementary and Madrona schools as well.
Children so far have used the dirt and gravel edges of the roadway. There also had been numerous complaints about drainage problems.
The project is set to start in late August and will not be done in time for the school year. Crews should wrap up work after the new year.
“We’re going to require a fairly robust pedestrian access plan during construction to make sure kids can still get to and from. I did a project like this a few years ago for a different city and we were able to make it work with minimal issues,” said Ryan Hague, the city’s capital projects manager.
The city teamed with Cascade Bicycle Club and the Edmonds Bicycle Advisory Group to bring safety education classes to Sherwood Elementary.
A $591,000 grant is helping cover costs.
