Lynnwood City Council incumbent Loren Simmonds holds a lead in votes from the Aug. 4 primary election counted through Monday but had less than the majority vote that he will need to win in the Nov. 3 general election.
Primary results posted through Monday, Aug. 10, showed Simmonds, president of the Lynnwood Council, leading the race for Council Position 4 with 43.63 percent of the votes to 37.97 percent for Shirley Sutton, his apparent November opponent, and 16.62 percent for Maria Ambalada, who apparently was eliminated in the primary.
Four years ago Simmonds led another three-way primary with an even smaller share of the votes – 42.92 percent – but went on to win a fourth four-year term in the general election.
In results from this year’s primary, Snohomish County elections officials had counted 4,110 Lynnwood ballots through Monday with at least 30 uncounted.
Ballots counted countywide through Monday represent 99.86 percent of ballots on hand, 80-90 percent of the expected final turnout and 22.76 percent of registered county voters.
County elections officials had received ballots from 22.86 percent of registered Snohomish County voters and from 22.89 percent of registered Lynnwood voters.
County officials plan to post updated returns Monday, Aug. 17, before final certification of results, Aug. 18.
Results of the other Lynwood Council position on the August ballot showed challenger Chris Frizell leading incumbent Councilman Benjamin Goodwin 45.82 percent to 41.14 percent, with candidate Douglas Jones trailing at 11.99 percent.
Two other Lynnwood positions will appear only on the November ballot because they had only two candidates each.
