OLYMPIA — A Thurston County school district is outfitting its school buses with alarm systems to ensure that every student gets off the bus by the end of a route.
The Olympian reports the new gadgets for North Thurston Public Schools are expected to be installed in all of the district’s 130 buses by the beginning of the school year.
When the driver shuts off the bus, the system arms and will sound if the driver doesn’t press a button at the back of the vehicle.
The alarm systems are meant to ensure drivers check each row for kids. In December, a 6-year-old was left alone on a bus for seven hours, and a preschooler was left alone for two hours in January 2013.
The drivers in both cases resigned.
