Much talk demeaning socialism and anyone associated with it has filled the letters to the editor lately.
The question is what do Medicare, Social Security, unemployment insurance, tuition assistance, environmental protection, public education, a minimum wage, workmen’s compensation, anti-discrimination rights, disability insurance, school lunch programs, Head Start, investing in inner cities, energy alternative subsidies, a progressive income tax, any income tax, cap and trade to help stop global warming, and overtime for over 40 hours have in common? They have all been called socialism. They also are all supported by Pope Francis. Has the word socialism come to be a way of demonizing caring people? When will the Christian right ever wake up to its hypocrisy? When will we stop being an embarrassment in the world?
