In Wednesday’s Herald, a gentleman added his support to previous contentions that Democrats are socialists, concluding his letter thusly: “Sounds to me like the only difference between a Democrat and a socialist is the name.” Instead of bickering about semantics, let’s just examine the observations upon which that assertion is based. 1) “Right now there is a war being waged by Democrats on people who own property and/or money.” 2) “… Obamacare, it doesn’t work.” 3) “Democrats are not religious or at the very least not devout …” 4) “Isn’t there a war on certain religions right now?” Given the lack of proof provided in support of these comments, it seems probable that the writer’s purpose was simply to express disdain for other points of view.
In the unlikely event that he would like to devote subsequent letters to persuading instead of venting, he’s invited to respond to the following: 1) Exactly how much should billionaires be taxed? What Jesus had to say about the rich and the poor may be helpful here. 2) How many of the millions who now have health insurance because of Obamacare agree that it doesn’t work? 3-4) Persuade people who rely on facts and reason (plus a bit of compassion) to guide their thinking, that those who derive their beliefs from archaic Biblical nonsense, deserve the right to discriminate against others in the marketplace. Label me a “socialist” or any other term deemed sufficiently demeaning but please, never call me a “conservative.”
