I appreciated very much your Aug. 8 article, “Working to be top dog.” I went to the event near Arlington the next day and enjoyed it very much. Most impressive was the total dedication of each dog to do what his handler commanded. The course required the dogs to bring in a hidden group of eight sheep from a location only visible to their controller; bring in a second hidden group; and then with the help of their controller separate four marked sheep. The whole event was difficult enough that about half of the dogs and handlers were able to complete the course. The most difficult part for the dogs was to release control of the first group and go after the second group, which solely depended on the commands of their handlers. I wanted every one to succeed, about half did.
A similar event, Vashon Sheep Dog Classic, will be held on Vashon Island Sept. 10-13.
