Lynnwood City Council incumbent Sid Roberts will face challenger George Hurst on the Nov. 3 general-election ballot.
Hurst and Roberts recently sent statements introducing themselves to voters. Here are their statements in the order their names will appear on the ballot and in the voters’ pamphlet:
Lynnwood City Council, Position #6
George Hurst: The next few years are crucial to the future of Lynnwood and I want to join with those who want to make our city a safer and better place to live and work.
In the next two years no less than four major construction projects will be completed, including Costco, a hotel and at least two multifamily complexes of over 250 units each. Has the city made sure that our streets and roads, and our fire and police departments are ready for this growth?
The City Council has passed the 2015-16 budget that includes 6 separate tax and fee increases. What kind of citizen input was used to justify all of these increases?
I pledge to be an honest, caring council member and act in the best interest of the citizens of Lynnwood. The priorities of the citizens must be the basis for budget decisions.
Things to know about me:
Lynnwood resident for more than 22 years. Married for 40 years with 4 children who all graduated from Lynnwood High School. Member Northlake Christian Church. Vice-chair of Lynnwood Planning Commission. Vice-chair of Lynnwood Public Works’ Traffic, Transportation Task Force. Charter organizer for Lynnwood National Night Out. Member Lynnwood Kiwanis. Licensed real estate agent. Manufacturers’ representative. Mariners fan.
Sid Roberts: I’m running for a 2nd term on the Lynnwood City Council to continue to help provide leadership, direction and civility to the council.
I helped lead the charge to ban personal fireworks in our city and also to promote smoke-free city parks. I proposed a compromise to the business-license fee that helped the City balance the budget. I have used my commercial real estate background to help the council make levelheaded land-use decisions. And, my attendance for council meetings has been nearly perfect.
I’m a strong backer of professional Fire and Police protection and believe public safety is job one.
I’m concerned about traffic in the area and support finding ways right now to fix our roads. I also support having sensible budgetary habits and not spending more money than the city has. We must always remember it’s the taxpayer’s money.
I believe my small business background, along with my negotiation skillset and my willingness to communicate, will help our council chart some potentially rough waters that may lie ahead. I have credibility with the business community, with the mayor’s office, city leaders and department directors and I’m known for my friendly demeanor and trustworthiness.
I have been endorsed by several local and county leaders, by the Lynnwood Police Guild, by respected local mayors and by several current and former candidates for City Council.
