YAKIMA, Wash. — The Yakima City Council has denied plans for a social services center that would have included emergency shelter for the homeless.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports that the council voted Tuesday to uphold an appeal of the city’s hearing examiner’s approval for the Yakima Neighborhood Health Services plan.
Council members say the decision is less about homeless services, and instead is a land-use issue. The plan is on hold unless Neighborhood Health challenges the city’s decision in Yakima County Superior Court or finds another location with different zoning.
Residents of the neighborhood by the proposed cite were unhappy with the proximity the center would have to homes. It would be replacing a convenience store, which they say is more useful.
