Howl: Scrub and save mutts in Marysville

Save-A-Mutt, a Silvana-based nonprofit, holds its Scrub-A-Mutt fundraising dog wash and dog-friendly celebration, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 22 at Strawberry Fields, 6100 152nd Place NE, Marysville. The suggested donation is $5 for small dogs, $10 for large dogs, and $5 for nail trims. Proceeds benefit local rescue centers, including Old Dog Haven, NOAH, the Everett Animal Shelter, Bulldog Haven NW. There also will be free microchipping, vendors, raffles, human food options and more.

Sew: Volunteers needed to make blankets

The Binky Patrol is a group of quilters, knitters and crocheters who make “binkies” for children in traumatic situations. They get together and make blankets, afghans, quilts, baby hats and booties, which then go to hospitals, clinics and group homes.

Several volunteers have moved or died in the last year and the group is seeking new help. Donations of fabric, yarn or thread also are welcome. The group meets next Aug. 30 in Marysville. The group typically meets the first Sunday of each month; after Aug. 30, the next meeting will be Oct. 1.

Learn: Forest owners can build skills

Participants will build skills for caring for their trees at the North Puget Sound Forest Owners Field Day, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 29 at Grandy Lake Forest, near Conway.

Washington State University Extension and other groups sponsor the event that features exhibits, equipment dealers, and experts teaching hourly workshops on forest health, wildlife, fire prevention, invasive brush, using chainsaws, using handheld GPS, cultivating edible mushrooms, and more. The cost to attend is $30, or $40 per couple, and includes lunch. Youth younger than 18 are free. There is a special student and Master Gardener rate. Registration is required.

Eat: Shellfish dinner

Sound Salmon Solutions and the Stillaguamish Clean Water District plan a free shellfish dinner, 3:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 29, to raise awareness about water quality problems and solutions in the Stillaguamish Valley. Local organic produce, bread and shellfish will be prepared by Danny Pickering from the Stanwood Grill. Guests will learn about local soft-shelled clams and how to help them and salmon thrive in Port Susan and Skagit Bay. The event will be held at the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center, 27130 102nd Ave. NW, Stanwood. Seating is limited. Residents of 98292 (Stanwood), 98223 (Arlington and Darrington), and 98252 (Granite Falls) in particular are invited to reserve their free spot through www.eventbrite.com (search “Free Shellfish Dinner”).

Dance: Special needs party spins up fun

The Marysville YMCA holds a Spin and Fit dance party the last Thursday of each month. The event is designed for those with special needs. Voices of the Village, a 32-member performance ensemble of people with developmental disabilities, will perform Aug. 27. The event includes the dance party from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. followed by a Zumba class from 7-8 p.m. Cost is $5. The Marysville Y is at 6420 60th Drive NE. Volunteers and donations of pre-packaged cookies and treats also are welcome.
