EVERETT — The Snohomish County Council is considering an emergency hiring freeze as more signs emerge of troubled county finances.
County Councilman Brian Sullivan introduced a proposal Wednesday that could go to a vote as early as next week. It would apply to most of the county’s approximately 2,800 budgeted positions. There are exceptions for the sheriff’s office and some top administrative positions.
The county last imposed a hiring freeze in 2008, when the effects of the Great Recession began to set in.
County Executive John Lovick is scheduled to recommend a budget for 2016 by the end of September. Final say rests with the County Council.
