EVERETT — Firefighters rescued an Everett man Wednesday night after he ran over an embankment while trying to get away from the police.
The incident began around 8:20 p.m. in the 6000 block of Pebble Place, Everett police Sgt. Ryan Dalberg said.
The suspect, 27, ran out the back door of a home when an officer showed up at his doorstep, Dalberg said. The officer had an arrest warrant for the man, a convicted sex offender who failed to register.
It was dark and the vegetation was thick behind the home, Dalberg said. As a result, the man couldn’t see well and ran over the embankment in his attempt to escape.
A technical rescue team from the Everett Fire Department was able to reach the man, who was taken to the hospital. The man told firefighters he’d injured his leg.
The steep slope, darkness and brush posed a challenge for firefighters.
Rescuers cleared a path to reach the man and determined that his injuries were not life-threatening. They placed him in a litter, which was attached to a pulley system and he was lifted up the 30-foot embankment.
“Happily they had just done some high-angle rescue training that day,” Everett Fire Marshal Rick Robinson said. “(The rescue) was like a Swiss watch.”
