SEATTLE — A man has been freed from prison after serving an unjust 12-year term.
Seattlepi.com reported Nickia Striet was released Thursday by the same judge who sentenced him more than a decade ago.
Striet was caught with a pistol during an Enumclaw traffic stop and was sentenced in 2004 to more than 15 years under the Armed Career Criminal Act, a law compared to the “three-strikes” rule in effect in Washington and other states.
Striet’s prior felonies, two burglary convictions and an assault charge, had counted against him. He was 29 at the time.
It wasn’t until June that the U.S. Supreme Court declared that part of the federal law was unconstitutional, allowing Striet to be freed.
Striet said he plans to reconnect with his daughters and marry his fiancee.
