Mariners sent left-hander Montgomery to Tacoma, recall Guaipe

CHICAGO — With two swingmen stepping into the rotation, the Mariners bolstered their bullpen prior Sunday’s game by recalling right-hander Mayckol Guaipe from Triple-A Tacoma.

The move came after the Mariners cleared space by optioning lefty starter Mike Montgomery to the Rainiers.

“Obvious reasons,” manager Lloyd McClendon said. “We needed another right-hander…it just made sense to bring back Guaipe.”

The Mariners needed another bullpen arm as they prepared to start Edgar Olmos in Sunday’s series finale against the White Sox and Vidal Nuno in Monday’s series opener at Houston.

Guaipe, 25, returns for a fourth time this season and saw immediate action. He coughed up a one-run lead Sunday in the seventh inning but was positioned for a victory when the Mariners scored in the eighth.

That slipped away when White Sox scored an unearned run with two outs in the ninth inning before gaining a walk-off victory in the 11th inning.

While Guaipe had a 2.87 ERA in 38 games at Tacoma, his now sports a 7.07 ERA in nine big-league appearances.

Montgomery surrendered his spot in the rotation Sunday to Olmos after compiling an 8.33 ERA over his previous nine starts. He was 4-6 with a 4.60 ERA overall in 16 starts following his June 2 recall from Tacoma.

Plans call for Montgomery to make two starts for the Rainiers, and his recall to the big leagues will hinge on his performance. Tacoma’s season ends on Sept. 7.

“It’s command of the zone,” McClendon said. “His stuff is plenty good enough, but there’s no defense for walks. You just can’t do it.”
