Regarding John Rosemond’s column, “Living with Children,” and the July 27 letter suggesting that such “outdated and inappropriate advice be dropped from the paper, I suspect supporter of Rosemond might have this response: Re-read (or read) “The Miracle Worker.” As every effective teacher, coach, parent or grandparent knows, any child, even someone as disabled as Helen Keller, has a better chance of success when not burdened by the weight of lowered expectations, and when mentors avoid enabling by insisting on good behavior. “Old fashioned” is not necessarily “inappropriate”! Anyone over 50 knows it.
