The big questions addressed to Seahawks coach Pete Carroll following Tuesday’s practice at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center centered around the potential addition of running back Fred Jackson.
Carroll acknowledged that Jackson, an eight-year veteran who was released by the Buffalo Bills on Monday, had visited the team. He also emphasized that it was merely a visit, that there had been no signing. He did, however, say that Jackson would under go a physical, suggesting a signing could be imminent should the 34-year-old Jackson pass the physical.
Carroll said back-up tailback Robert Turbin suffered a sprained ankle during Saturday’s 16-15 victory at San Diego, but implied that the interest in Jackson was not related to Turbin’s injury. Carroll singled out Jackson’s pass-catching abilities out of the backfield (he caught 66 balls with the Bills last season) as a reason for the interest.
There is no timetable for Turbin’s return. He did not practice Tuesday.
Also of note:
– Starting free safety Earl Thomas shed his red no-contact jersey and practiced at full strength for the first time Tuesday. Carroll said Thomas, who is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, would not play Thursday in the preseason finale against Oakland.
– Receiver Chris Matthews was back at practice for the first time since suffering a shoulder injury during Seattle’s Week 1 preseason game against Denver. Carroll described Matthews as “ready to go.”
– Linebacker Mike Morgan pulled a hamstring in Saturday’s game and will not play this week.
– Back-up quarterback Tavaris Jackson continues to make progress from the ankle injury suffered against Denver, and Carroll is hopeful Jackson will be back for the regular season opener Sept. 13 at St. Louis.
– Carroll said there’s nothing new with regards to strong safety Kam Chancellor’s holdout, which reached day 33 Tuesday.
