Silvertips sign three forwards

The Everett Silvertips announced three signings Tuesday as forwards Connor Dewar, Riley Sutter and Sean Mallonee signed Western Hockey League Standard Player Agreements.

Sutter and Dewar are each in their 16-year-old seasons. Mallonee is 17 and played last season for the Junior Silvertips 16U midget team.

Dewar, originally from The Pas, Manitoba, was Everett’s fifth-round selection in the 2014 Bantam Draft. The 5-foot-10, 165-pounder played last season for the MMHL’s Parkland Rangers.

He tallied 15 goals and 22 assists in 43 games and was the recipient of the Thompson Minor Hockey Association’s Munn Cup Most Valuable Player Award. He played for Team Manitoba at the Canadian Winter Games in February.

Dewar had a goal and two assists in Sunday’s Green and Grey Game at Xfinity Arena.

“He came into our camp (this year) and showed everybody his giant growth and development as a player,” said Everett General Manager Garry Davidson. “It was a unanimous thing. We had to get this guy this guy in the fold.”

Sutter is a 6-2, 185-pound forward from Calgary, Alberta, and was Everett’s sixth-round pick in the 2014 Bantam Draft. He boasts a strong hockey pedigree as his father, Ron, played 19 seasons in the NHL, and his uncle, Darryl, led the Los Angeles Kings to two Stanley Cups as head coach. Ten different members of Sutter’s family have played in the WHL.

“He’s a Sutter and everybody in the hockey world knows who the Sutters are,” Davidson said. “He got better and better all year long and climbed up our draft chart. We were fortunate he was there for us to get picked… He fits into that mold of a big, strong, prototypical power forward.”

Sutter played 36 games last season with the minor midget AAA Rangers of the Calgary Buffalo Hockey Association. He tallied 22 goals and 28 assists.

Mallonee, a Kennewick native, scored five goals and had 12 assists in 19 games with the Junior Silvertips. The 5-10, 180-pounder played in last season’s Under-16 All-Star Game in the North American Prospects Hockey League.

“He isn’t overly big, but he plays bigger than he is,” Davidson said. “He gets his nose in there and goes where he has to go. He’s very determined to play in the WHL as a fulltime player.”

Davidson said the Tips will announce additional signings on Thursday.
