PORTLAND, Ore. — The team fighting a large wildfire in Eastern Oregon has scheduled a final community meeting in Prairie City, a place that has been threatened by the blaze for weeks.
The meeting was scheduled for late Thursday afternoon at the local grange hall. It’s another sign crews are gaining control of a fire that has scorched 165 square miles and destroyed 43 houses since it was started by lightning Aug. 12.
Prairie City is now in a Level 1 evacuation, the lowest of the three levels.
Though the wildfire is almost 60 percent contained, there’s still plenty of work left. Officials say the eastern perimeter of fire within the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness spotted across a road Wednesday and into the Strawberry Lake and Lake Creek areas.
Firefighters, however, are getting help from a cold front expected to last through the weekend.
