Yes, black lives do matter. The question is: What does it take to keep young, black men alive? There are times when noisy demonstrations and protests are needed — when an important issue is submerged in ignorance or deliberate obfuscation. But in this case, a few trigger-happy police officers have already caught and focused our attention. In the matter at hand, the present need is for organization and strategy. Medgar Evers understood that; so, on a different plane, did Thurgood Marshall. And so, of course, did Martin Luther King Jr.. Discomfiting one’s allies is counterproductive. Of all the declared candidates, Sen. Bernie Sanders is, based on his record, the likeliest to act decisively in behalf of this cause, especially if its defenders are serious, not just noisy.
