Last season: 3-2 league, 5-5 overall; lost 42-14 to Eastside Catholic in the Class 3A quad-district playoffs

Word from the coach: “We are excited about this group. We have a great group of seniors who have provided excellent leadership this off-season. We have tweaked our offense quite a bit to match our personnel and we studied a new way to call plays using those big posterboards you see college teams use. We have changed our defense from a 3-4 to a 3-5. We are in a very tough conference, but we expect to compete to be conference champs.”

Word from the coach: “We’re fighting a little bit to not think about anything beyond Week 1. We have some things to do to get there, and we’ve taken some good steps already this preseason. We have set team goals. … They’re up on the wall, but we want our guys’ heads focused on winning the first game. For a team that was 1-9 the last three years, we want to get the first one out of the way early.”

Coach’s quote: “Right now, we’re where we want to be in the program moving it forward. I call it, ‘Phase Two.’ We’ve established some traditions and now we want to move to get the program to compete with everybody, getting to the point where any team we face, we’re going to compete. I think this group has bought into that. That’s what they’re expecting to do.”

Coach’s quote: “Each and every kid, once we get their roles defined, are going to have to be effective in the job that we do. If they do that, we should be OK. Our goal, like it is every year, is to get into the playoffs and we’ll see what happens.”

Word from the coach: “We are going to be pretty young and inexperienced, but we had a great summer and are very excited for this year. As with most high school teams, depth is an issue, so staying healthy throughout the year will be very important.”

Key returners: Coach Dave Telford said Stanwood’s emphasis is on the team and that the impact players will be those who help bring the team together.

Word from the coach: “Our program goal is turn the ship around from the directions it headed last year. The great thing is that we have a great attitude and great approach this season. We have had better commitment in the offseason and although it may not show in the win-loss column, we can already feel the difference internally. Our focus is on the process of being great teammates of character and working to be the best person we can be. The rest will take care of itself.”
