PORT ORCHARD — State regulators say a vessel that sank at a Port Orchard marina this week has spilled far more fuel and oil into Puget Sound than initially thought.
Department of Ecology spokesman Larry Altose says cleanup crews have recovered at least 500 gallons.
The Kitsap Sun reports the owner of the 70-foot fishing boat, the Tango, told officials Wednesday there might be 50 gallons of fuel on board.
Altose says quick action by staff at Railway Marina and firefighters helped contain the spill to the immediate area of the marina.
The sinking was reported around 5 a.m. Wednesday.
State officials using a helicopter reported that the oil sheen was about 100 feet wide that extended a mile or so northeast of the marina.
Marina manager Jeremy McNeil said Thursday that the owner has cooperated with plans for removing the Tango.
