VANCOUVER, B.C. — Three Everett pitchers combined to surrender 15 hits as the Vancouver Canadians hammered the Everett AquaSox 12-5 on Friday night at Nat Bailey Field.
Lane Ratliff (1-4) took the loss for Everett, working 2 2/3 innings and allowing seven earned runs on seven hits.
The two teams traded three-spots in the first inning before the Canadians erupted for seven runs in the next three frames to power to the victory.
Jordan Cowan was a bright spot in defeat for the AquaSox, as the second baseman went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored in the game.
Logan Taylor chipped in three RBI before leaving the game in the fourth inning for a pinch-hitter.
Every Vancouver starter save one had at least one hit, and the Canadians were led by a 4-for-5 night from second baseman Ryan Metzler.
Francisco Rios (3-6) combined with three Vancouver relievers on the victory, allowing five runs — four earned — on eight hits in five innings of work. He fanned seven and walked three.
Also Friday, Everett left-hander Joe Pistorese received a 50-game suspension from the Commissioner’s Office of MLB after testing positive for amphetamines in violation of the minor-league drug program.
Pistorese, 22, was the Mariners’ 15th-round pick in the June draft from Washington State.
He was 6-0 with a 1.28 ERA in 16 relief appearances for the AquaSox and was picked as the Northwest League pitcher of the week for Aug. 17-23.
Drew Jackson honored
The AquaSox announced Friday that shortstop Drew Jackson has been named the Northwest League Player of the Month by Minor League Baseball.
Jackson hit .417 in August and posted a .505 on-base percentage.
The 20-year-old Northwest League All-Star also stole 20 bases in 22 attempts in August, nine more than any other player in the league. Selected by the Seattle Mariners in the fifth-round of the 2015 draft out of Stanford, Jackson led the NWL in batting average, runs scored, hits, steals and on-base percentage during the month.
The AquaSox are the second-half champions of the NWL’s North Division. They open the playoffs Monday at home against Tri-City.
Jackson’s success hasn’t been limited to August, though. He leads the league in batting average (.367), runs scored (63), on-base percentage (.438) and steals (47). The Orinda, California, native also won Northwest League Player of the Week twice — for July 20-27 and for Aug. 3-10.
