Trading running back Christine Michael was just one of Seattle’s moves Sunday as the Seahawks also announced their initial practice squad.
Seattle’s initial practice squad list contains seven players, headlined by former University of Washington wide receivers Kevin Smith and Kasen Williams. Both Smith and Williams impressed during the regular season, with Smith showing promise in the return game and Williams making some key catches. There was speculation both could beat out veterans for spots on the 53-man roster, and I’m sure the Seahawks are thrilled they went unclaimed.
The other players signed to Seattle practice squad were tight end RaShaun Allen, offensive linemen Will Pericak and Terry Poole, linebacker Eric Pinkins, and running back Rod Smith. All seven players on the official list were in camp with the Seahawks.
Teams can carry 10 players on their practice squad. Two others were cut loose by other teams and signed by Seattle, according to Twitter reports. Those were cornerback Justin Coleman, a rookie free agent out of Tennessee who was released by New England, and cornerback Kevin Short, a rookie free agent out of Kansas who was let go by Kansas City.
Seattle had four potential practice squad signings pulled out from under them as they were claimed off waivers by other teams, which signed them to their 53-man rosters. Those four were defensive end Obum Gwacham (New Orleans), defensive tackle T.Y. McGill (Indianapolis), and safeties Keenan Lambert (Oakland) and Ronald Martin Jr. (New York Jets). Gwacham was a sixth-round pick in this year’s draft, while McGill, Lambert and Martin were undrafted free agents. The Seahawks had the most players claimed of any team in the NFL.
