Jance finally brings together two of her protagonists — Seattle detective J.P. Beaumont and Arizona sheriff Brandon Walker — in this suspenseful novel. The plot centers on two cold cases more than 1,500 miles apart that suddenly become red-hot. Connected with a missing boy’s life at state, Beaumont and Walker join forces to stop a sociopathic smuggler who has eluded justice for decades.
Jonathan Evison
7 p.m. Sept. 9, Third Place Books
Published by Algonquin, Evison’s new novel — “This is Your Life, Harriet Chance!” — has been called “funny, moving, wistful and wise.” A best-selling and critically acclaimed author, who Sherman Alexie has called the “most honest white man alive,” Evison sets his story about the recently widowed 78-year-old Harriet Chance on an Alaska cruise. Harriet spends her time during the cruise visited by the ghost of her husband Bernard and reflecting on her life, a journey that becomes the real voyage. Evison said he wrote the book as a tribute to the courageous women in his life — women who have settled for less, given and given, soldiered on in the face of despair and forgiven beyond reasonable measure. Third Place Books is located at 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park.
Holly Hughes, Mark Rozema

Poet Hughes and essayist Rozema plan to read from their writings during this Edmonds Art Walk event at the book store, 111 Fifth Ave. S. A gillnetter and naturalist, Hughes’ latest work is “Sailing by Ravens,” a poetry collection inspired by 30 seasons of fishing off Alaska. Rozema, photographer who writes about the American West, plans to read from his new book, “Road Trip.”
