SILVERDALE, Wash. — A school district in Kitsap County has spent nearly $250,000 in its legal battle with the federal government over money for military communities.
The Kitsap Sun reports the Central Kitsap School District has spent that money since 2011 trying to recoup more than $25 million in federal military aid denied to it.
The district had received between $3 million and $9 million a year before it was deemed ineligible in 2011 by the U.S. Department of Education.
So-called “heavy impact” money is given to districts with a large number of students who are military dependents, children of federal workers or Native Americans. The district says it relies on that money because the federal government doesn’t pay local property taxes that support the schools.
District officials are currently appealing in federal court.
Central Kitsap is one of a couple dozen districts getting the aid every year and the only one in Washington.
