RENTON — Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll confirmed Monday that the team has received calls from other teams regarding the availability of Pro Bowl safety Kam Chancellor.
He was also clear about what Seattle’s reaction has been to those inquiries: No thank you.
Chancellor’s holdout reached day 39 Monday with no end in sight. However, despite rumors swirling about the possibility of a trade, Carroll said that’s not something the Seahawks are considering at this point.
“There have been a couple phone calls from other teams, people kind of wondering what’s going on,” Carroll acknowledged following Monday’s practice at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center. “We’re really not interested in talking to them about that, so we don’t.”
Though Carroll dismissed trade possibilities, he said there were no new developments in Chancellor’s holdout.
Captains picked
Seattle’s players voted Monday on their captains for the 2015 season. The captains are quarterback Russell Wilson on offense, linebacker Bobby Wagner on defense and punter Jon Ryan on special teams.
“Three really good guys who really stand for everything we’re all about,” Carroll said. “They’re tough competitors and good leaders in every way, so we’re lucky to have those guys chosen.”
Wilson and Ryan are repeat captains from last season. Wagner takes over on defense for Chancellor.
Injury update
Carroll confirmed Monday that starting free safety Earl Thomas, who didn’t play during the preseason as he recovered from offseason shoulder surgery, will be ready for Sunday’s season opener at St. Louis. He also said backup quarterback Tavaris Jackson (ankle), who is throwing in practice, should be available Sunday.
The Seahawks are still waiting to find out whether tight end Cooper Helfet (ankle) will be able to go Sunday. Linebacker Mike Morgan (hamstring) is unlikely to play against the Rams.
Practice squad additions
Seattle filled out its 10-man practice squad Monday with the signing of three players who were released by other teams. Cornerback Justin Coleman, a rookie free agent from Tennessee, was released by New England; cornerback Kevin Short, a rookie free agent from Fort Scott CC, was released by Kansas City; and defensive end Robert Thomas, a rookie free agent from Arkansas, was released by Washington. They join the seven players signed Sunday who were in training camp with the Seahawks.
