SEATTLE — A Waste Management proposal to transport toxic soil across the Duwamish River is drawing criticism from activists who are concerned about possible spills.
KING-TV reported that Duwamish River Clean-Up Coalition Director James Rasmussen says an accident would result in a major environmental setback.
Waste Management hopes to secure permits to move soil dredged from the Port of Bellingham to a landfill. It’s contaminated after years of industrial waste.
The soil would be barged to the site to be loaded onto trains.
Rasmussen says that plan has raised concerns, especially after recent repeat violations cited by the Department of Ecology at the same location.
Waste Management defends its response, arguing it fixed the problems.
The soil, they say, must go somewhere and be transported by someone.
