PASCO — The Everett AquaSox’s season came to an end Tuesday night as the Tri-City Dust Devils defeated the Frogs 4-2 in Game 2 of the best-of-three Northwest League North Division playoff series at Gesa Stadium.
Tri-City, which won Game 1 of the series 2-1 in 16 innings on Monday night, won the series 2-0. The Dust Devils, who won the NWL’s North Division first-half title, play either Hillsboro or Salem-Keizer of the South Division in the league championship series. The Hillsboro-Salem-Keizer series is tied 1-1.
The AquaSox, the North Division winner in the second half of the season, finished with six straight losses — four to end the regular season and two in the playoffs.
The Dust Devils broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring on RBI singles by Henry Charles and A.J. Kennedy.
Tri-City’s Elvin Liriano pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up the save. Three Dust Devil pitchers combined to limit the AquaSox to five hits in the game.
Tri-City had five hits in the bottom of the second inning as the Dust Devils took a 2-0 lead. Tri-City scored on an RBI single by Kennedy and an RBI double by Rod Boykin.
The AquaSox cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth. Drew Jackson singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Erick Mejia and scored on a single by Jordan Cowan.
Everett tied the score 2-2 in the top of the fifth on a solo home run by Taylor Zeutenhorst.
AquaSox starting pitcher Luis Gohara pitched seven innings. The left-hander allowed two runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Spencer Herrmann, who walked one and allowed a single to the two batters he faced in the eighth inning, was charged with the loss.
On Monday, the Dust Devils needed 16 innings in a game that went five hours and 10 minutes to beat the AquaSox 2-1 in Game 1 at Everett Memorial Stadium. The game ended at 12:20 a.m.
In the top of the 16th, the Dust Devils Austin Allen hit a ground ball that hit the first base bag and bounced up in the air for a single. Henry Charles followed with a fly-ball double off the scoreboard in right center, putting runners on second and third. Kodie Tidwell singled to left field on an 0-2 pitch to score pinch-runner Mason Smith from third base with what proved to be the game-winning run.
Everett stranded 11 runners in Monday’s game, including the winning run at third base in both the 13th and 14th innings. The AquaSox finished 0-for-14 with runners in scoring position.
