One of the best things about the annual Edmonds Coho Derby is that the fish are usually waiting at the back door. Many of the derby entries, including, often, the $5,000 first-place coho, are caught right out in front of Edmonds, or just up the shoreline at the “shipwreck.”
Saturday’s 2015 edition of the event probably will follow the pattern, said All Star Charters owner/skipper Gary Krein of Everett.
“Stay out toward the shipping lanes, be on the water before the sun comes up, and start at a depth of 30 to 50 feet,” Krein said. “A standard rig would be a white or spatterback green squid, 28 to 32 inches behind your flasher.”
Nearly 1,000 anglers fished the derby last year. The first-place fish weighed 11.5 pounds and was caught by Daniel Lejnieks.
Full rules and tickets, at $30 a copy, are available at most area tackle shops and marinas. The event operates out of both the Port of Edmonds, and Bayside Marine adjacent to the Port of Everett ramp. It includes a separate kids’ division, and all entries qualify for a chance at the Salmon Derby Series boat/motor/trailer drawing.
