EVERETT — Weak ceiling tiles foiled a woman’s escape attempt from the Everett Police Department’s north precinct earlier this week.
The Everett woman fell halfway through and into the waiting arms of officers. The incident occurred late Tuesday night.
The woman, 20, was arrested earlier in the evening for investigation of drug possession, assault and misdemeanor warrants.
While she was being held in a secure waiting area, the woman asked two officers if she could use the bathroom, according to a police report.
An officer removed her handcuffs and let her go into the bathroom by herself. Officers waited outside.
An officer heard “unusual banging noises inside” and asked the woman if she was OK.
“Yeah, I’m good,” she allegedly called out.
A few minutes later, he heard another loud bang.
He called out that he was coming in.
Once inside, he saw that ceiling tiles had been moved and discovered that no one was behind the locked door of the bathroom stall.
Other officers joined the search.
Moments later, the suspect — whose weight was listed as 120 pounds — fell part way through the ceiling tiles near the bathroom door.
Officers pulled her the rest of the way out.
The woman may now be charged for attempting to escape custody.
Damage to the ceiling was estimated to be more than $1,000.
