John Lovick has stated he is “tired of chasing options.” Looking to get elected as County Executive, Lovick does not seem to grasp the huge unnecessary financial burden that a new courthouse will impose on taxpayers as he continues to beat the drum for the wrong courthouse option. What additional services will a new courthouse provide that the public would not otherwise have if we were to modernize our existing courthouse that would be of long-term benefit to the public? Tearing down the one built in 1967 is senseless and very costly. Studies verify it is worthy of preservation. Lovick bypasses the concerns of those who will be left to pay for this new nonessential courthouse. My hunch is the city of Everett is looking ahead in an effort to revitalize the downtown corridor. Substituting a big box courthouse one block north of where it is now, that becomes dormant after 5 p.m., does nothing to revitalize Everett and only serves to take away existing parking which is becoming in short supply.
Snohomish County decision makers ought to consider what PUD Commissioners wisely did back in the early 1970s. They saw the need and built a local condensed PUD office building on Highway 99, which quickly became indispensable to south county residents. Does it make sense for people in the south end to always drive to Everett to conduct county business?
