KENNEWICK — Dawson Leedahl scored a goal and added an assist, and goaltender Mario Petit made 24 saves to lead the Everett Silvertips to a 3-1 victory over the Portland Winterhawks in Western Hockey League preseason action Friday.
With the victory, the Silvertips improved their preseason record to 4-1. They open the regular season Sept. 25 at Prince George.
Friday’s game was scoreless in the first period despite the Silvertips outshooting the Winterhawks 17-13.
Spencer Gerth’s backdoor goal — a finish near the right post off Leedahl’s feed — gave Everett a 1-0 lead at 4:09 of the second period. Alex Overhardt’s fourth goal of the preseason tied the game 1-1 at 9:12 when he got behind the defense and finished a deke on Petit.
Just 2:24 later, Everett’s Patrick Bajkov hammered a slap shot past Michael Bullion for a 2-1 advantage. Leedahl then added his goal with just 11 seconds remaining in the period, extending the Silvertips’ cushion to 3-1.
The Silvertips stayed out of the penalty box for the final 20 minutes and allowed just three shots on goal in the final period. For the game, Everett outshot Portland 45-25.
Bullion took the loss for Portland despite making 42 saves.

The Silvertips scratched Noah Juulsen, Cole Chorney, Alexander Scherbakov, Carson Stadnyk, Lucas Skrumeda, Austin Lotz, Kevin Davis, Gunnar Wegleitner and Yan Khomenko. … The Silvertips’ penalty killing unit was 3-of-3 on Friday, moving its preseason total to 22-of-23 (95.6 percent). … Everett went 1-for-3 on the power-play.
