EVERETT — Prosecutors have charged an Arlington man with vehicular homicide for a 2014 crash that killed a Stanwood teenager.
Nicole Wiebe, 18, was riding in the backseat of a 1992 Lexus when the driver lost control. The car plowed through three fences, slid sideways into a tree and came to rest in a pasture in the Arlington Heights area.
The car was contorted in a C-shape with the back passenger side taking the brunt of the collision, Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Tobin Darrow wrote.
Darrow alleges that Alexander Chilelli was driving at least 70 mph on Feb. 16, 2014 when he lost control of his car. Chilelli, 21, is accused of driving in a reckless manner that led to Wiebe’s death.
She sustained fatal head injuries and died at the scene.
Her boyfriend, who was riding in the front seat, told investigators that there was talk in car about getting some air off one of the hills in the 13000 block of 240th Street NE.
“He stated, ‘people know about it and we didn’t think it was gonna go wrong so we’re all for it,’ ” Darrow wrote in court papers.
The man told investigators that Chilelli lost control as the car landed.
The defendant allegedly told a deputy on scene that he was driving up to 100 mph over the hill. When he was asked why, Chilelli allegedly replied, “It was fun.”
All three young people in the car were wearing their seat belts.
Chilelli doesn’t have any criminal history. He is scheduled to be in court later this month to answer to the charge.
