There is the Wacky Worm at the Evergreen State Fair, and there is 128th Street near McCollum Park.
Both are roller coaster rides.
But only one can reasonably be described as “fun.” (Children smiling in the rear-view mirror from their car seats may beg to differ.)
The notorious curve by the park will have its ups and downs for the foreseeable future.
“The section of State Route 96 near McCollum Park was built on landfill, which has settled through the years and created some dips in the pavement,” said Tom Pearce, a Washington State Department of Transportation spokesperson.
WSDOT crews on Aug. 18 did some paving work to smooth things out.
“However, simply filling in the dips with more pavement will not provide a long-term solution for these issues,” Pearce acknowledged. “Currently we are looking at options for stabilizing the ground under the roadway in this area. Once we have the options, WSDOT will develop a project plan. We also are seeking funding for any work to be done in the area.
“This is a long-term effort and will take at least a few years,” he said.
