Regarding oil train safety, your recent article, “Prepping for an oil train disaster,” reminded me of two potential disasters that I personally witnessed. Each situation involved a vehicle racing to get across the tracks as a train was approaching a crossing. The vehicles barely succeeded in each case. The problem, the gate was already down, but they could not see that since the road made a sharp right turn in each case.
Each of these events took place along the waterfront; the first in Seattle and the second in Edmonds by the ferry dock.
A possible solution: Install a second crossing gate at a right angle to the current gate. One that can be seen along the road of travel.
