KENNEWICK — Members of law enforcement in Franklin County are getting new radios through a federal grant.
The Tri-City Herald reported that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is contributing almost $634,000 to fund new dual-band radios for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Connell Police Department and Port of Pasco.
The three agencies are contributing more than $211,000.
Sheriff Jim Raymond announced the grant Monday. He said the new radios will put area law enforcement on the same frequency. Officers will still have access to the old frequency to ensure coverage in areas where it is still used.
Communications issues in July 2014 almost led to an officer getting shot by a neighborhood gunman. Raymond said the new radios will hopefully prevent similar incidents in the future.
