Foggy mornings are more prevalent this time of year, when cooling temperatures meet warmer Puget Sound waters.
Washington State Ferries last week had to cancel several sailings on the Port Townsend/Coupeville route. Other routes saw delays because of the fog.
“While our vessels may sometimes operate in low visibility because of redundancies in radios, radar and other equipment, the captain makes the final decision based on safety, especially if there is other marine traffic in the area,” said Lynne Griffith, assistant secretary for the WSDOT Ferries Division, in her latest newsletter.
In fall 2013, a ferry nearly collided with a fishing boat in fog near Clinton.
