EVERETT — On Thursday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began repairs to the Union Slough levee.
A 100-foot-long section of the levee was damaged during high river flow in November 2014, which drastically reduced its ability to control flooding.
The damaged levee is on the southwest corner of Smith Island, just south of Everett’s Water Pollution Control Facility.
Repairs to the segment include rebuilding erosion protection along the damaged section with an additional 25 feet on both sides for tie-in purposes, regrading the levee slope to make it more gradual on the river side, and adding a blanket of rock armor to protect against erosive river flows.
The $86,000 repair project is covered in a cost-sharing agreement, with the Army Corps paying for 80 percent of construction costs and Snohomish County Diking District No. 5 picking up the rest.
