EVERETT — A Paine Field runway is set for an overhaul next year.
The County Council on Wednesday approved a $7.4 million bid from Interwest Construction of Burlington to reconfigure the airport’s cross runway, also known as Runway 11/29, which runs at a diagonal to the main runway.
The work includes repaving the runway and reconfiguring taxi lanes, airport director Arif Ghouse said. The runway also is to be shortened.
Federal Aviation Administration grants will cover nearly two-thirds of the cost and the airport the rest.
Contractors are now working on a separate contract to install LED lighting on airport runways and taxiways, Ghouse said. The new lights will replace incandescent lights and should help slash electricity bills.
