SNOHOMISH — After suffering a season-opening loss to Lake Stevens, the Snohomish volleyball team was eager to return to the court.
The Panthers squared off against Jackson Thursday night and avenged their loss with a 25-18, 27-25, 18-25, 16-25, 15-11 Wesco 4A victory over the Timberwolves at Snohomish High School.
“They really, really wanted to get back on the court,” said Snohomish head coach Alex Tarin. “They couldn’t wait to play again after that loss. We cleaned up a lot of our errors we made Tuesday night.
“Our theme this year is: ‘Stronger together,’ and we talked about how it’s always easy to be together during a win and it’s harder to be together during a loss,” Tarin continued. “We said, ‘No matter what, tonight we’re going to be together. No matter what.’ And it was an up-and-down game. Jackson’s a tough team.”
Snohomish jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to strong games by Jessica Brennis (18 kills, eight digs, three aces) and Kyla Mellick (14 kills, eight digs, three aces).
However, Jackson battled back. The Timberwolves won the third and forth sets to force a decisive fifth set.
“They took the lead on us and we battled back and took the lead near the end and were able to pull off the victory at the end,” Tarin said of the final set. “… Jessica really got us going off strong. Kyla took it over after that. And in that fifth set it was everybody.”
Claire Turner had 22 assists and Allie Graham added 23 assists for Snohomish (1-1 league and overall), which is hoping to continue its winning ways next Tuesday against Monroe.
“That’s our goal. We’re trying to get after it,” Tain said.” Take this win and learn from it. Learn the things that we do well and capitalize on them.”
Grace Jarnagin added 38 assists and 14 digs for Jackson (1-1).
“Jackson is a very well-coached team,” Tarin said. “They have a great coaching staff and they bring it to us every time. They know how to hit the ball well, they pass it well. It’s always a fun battle. I always enjoy playing them.”
