SEATTLE — The U.S. Department of Justice has award a nearly $500,000 grant for a program to reduce gun violence in Seattle.
U.S. Attorney Annette Hayes says the grant, announced Friday, will support the Puget Sound Regional Crime Gun Task Force, which helps law enforcement trace guns used in crimes so they can identify the shooters and get them off the streets.
The grant will also help pay for a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney to prosecute gun crimes, and provides funds to Harborview Medical Center to work with gunshot victims.
The new funds will make it possible for all crime gun information to be entered into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network database within 72 hours of an incident.
Nearly $40,000 will go to the Seattle Police Department to develop a plan for addressing gang violence.
