TACOMA — Pierce County officials say they’re still tallying their bills after hosting the U.S. Open golf tournament at Chambers Bay, but they expect they’ll at least break even.
The News Tribune reported that county leaders say they may even collect enough revenue to pay off some debt incurred after the links-style course was built eight years ago.
Officials say they’re encouraged that security costs for the event, held in June, came in close to estimates — about $2 million. The Legislature’s allocation of $750,000 to pay the Washington State Patrol to help with traffic control helped, as did the city of Tacoma’s offer to provide police at no cost to the county. Several other police agencies, however, did charge for their services. The county paid nearly $290,000 to 22 law enforcement agencies that sent officers to help.
In the end the county’s taxpayers were only on the hook for about $700,000 in security costs.
