Everett Silvertips defenseman Alexander Scherbakov, who turns 18 on Dec. 24, had season-ending shoulder surgery Monday.
Scherbakov, one of Everett’s two selections in the 2015 CHL import draft, suffered a torn labrum during the Silvertips’ win over Portland Sept. 6 at Xfinity Arena.
“The surgeon said everything went really well,” said Silvertips general manager Garry Davidson. “They’re happy with how it shook out, but it was major shoulder surgery.”
Davidson said the recovery process is six-to-nine months and it was a similar injury suffered by former Silvertips star defenseman Ryan Murray, who is now with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
SCHERBAKOV’S countryman and fellow 2015 CHL draftee Yan Khomenko missed the second half of practice after he banged his head into the crossbar while crashing the goal during drills Monday. Khomenko was down for a couple minutes while he was tended to by the Everett medical staff before he skated off the ice and did not return.
Head coach Kevin Constantine wasn’t sure of Khomenko’s status after practice, so that’s something we’ll keep our eye on the rest of the week.
Twenty-year-old defenseman Cole MacDonald also sat out practice with what appeared to be a lower-body injury. MacDonald also missed the final two periods of the Silvertips’ preseason victory over Victoria Saturday. Constantine said he hopes to have MacDonald back by the weekend.
THE SILVERTIPS radio show returns Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. at Sporty’s Beef and Brew at 6503 Evergreen Way in Everett. New Tips broadcaster Mike Benton will play host as Everett assistant coach Brennan Sonne and 18-year-old Kevin Davis join him.
