The letter, “DUI: Impound car when stopped,” got it right, but didn’t go far enough. Far too often we read about people who have a history of multiple DUIs. Usually, by the time we read about it in the newspaper, it’s because they have killed someone. Clearly, tickets, fines and brief jail time are inadequate penalties. There should never be even a second DUI. Law enforcement is allowed to seize the cars of drug dealers. It would seem that the same logic could be applied to seizing the car of someone convicted of a DUI. Seize it — and don’t return it.
