On Sept. 16, the Boeing Employee Credit Union held its annual People Helping People Awards at the Museum of Flight in Seattle. At this event, it was announced that Victim Support Services, a non-profit which assisted Marysville Pilchuck High School students and staff last fall, was voted by BECU employees to receive one of two $15,000 awards.
I was invited to attend this amazing event to represent All Aboard, a Snohomish County activities program for adults with special needs, whereby we were awarded one of nine $5,000 community awards. Our group not only felt valued and honored by this recognition but also humbled by being in the company of both past and current recipients that do so much to support and serve others in the Pacific Northwest. I also learned that BECU was formed in 1935 when 18 Boeing employees put in 50 cents each for a total of $9 in assets. The first loans were in the amount of $2.50. At that time employees were required to purchase their own tools, and because many could not afford this expense on their own, these $2.50 loans supported this need. Eighty years later, BECU has nearly one million members! Thank you BECU for creating the opportunity for us to meet other non-profits, many of your employees and board members, and providing a much needed monetary award to All Aboard. Most importantly thank you for your many years of service to the our greater Pacific Northwest community and embracing your mission that People Helping People truly makes a difference through your ongoing contributions of volunteer time and donations.
