Monroe teen critically injured in crash, driver of other car in jail

MONROE — A Monroe teen suffered critical injuries in a weekend crash that landed the driver of the other car in jail.

The girl, 16, was a passenger in a 1991 Honda Accord that was struck by a stolen Subaru in the 300 block of W Main Street shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday. She suffered life-threatening head injuries and was taken by medics to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. The driver of the Honda was treated for minor injuries.

Police reported finding the Subaru driver hiding in some bushes at the Lewis Street boat launch about three-quarters of a mile from the crash scene. He was identified as Jarid Castillo, 28, of Monroe. He received medical attention after being bitten by a police dog involved in the search, according to a police report.

A collision report indicated that the Subaru was southbound on N Madison Street when it went through a stop sign “at a high rate of speed” at W Main Street. The impact spun the Honda 180 degrees and it came to rest 50 feet away. The speed limit in the area was 25 mph.

The Subaru also hit three vehicles in a used car parking lot.

Shortly after the collision, the Subaru was reported stolen from a Monroe home, police spokeswoman Debbie Willis said.

The car’s owner told police that the suspect had been staying at her house with his dad. She identified a bandana found outside the car as belonging to the suspect. A witness to the crash also identified Castillo as the man driving the car.

Castillo was arrested for investigation of vehicular assault and possessing a stolen vehicle. He was booked into the Snohomish County Jail. His bail was set at $350,000 in Everett District Court on Monday.

The injured girl is a junior at Leaders In Learning, a Monroe alternative high school with about 80 students. She also is enrolled in Running Start where she was going to be taking community college classes this fall, said Monroe School District spokeswoman Rosemary O’Neil.
