Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman had a couple good lines during his press conference Thursday at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center.
First, he was asked about his 64-yard punt return on the trick play Seattle ran against Chicago last Sunday, in which as the gunner he sprinted back 45 yards to catch the punt as Tyler Lockett faked catching it on the opposite side the the field, then turned around and sprinted 64 yards the other direction:
“People were talking about like, ‘What was your celebration going to be [if he scored a touchdown]?’ There wasn’t going to be a celebration, there was going to be oxygen. Hopefully someone would carry me off.”
Sherman also has a sparring history with Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, whose nickname is Megatron. When the Seahawks faced Detroit in 2012 Sherman changed his Twitter handle to Optimus Prime as a counter to Johnson’s Megatron. Sherman was set up perfectly Thursday when, in advance of Monday night’s game against Detroit, he was asked who his favorite Transformer was:
“That’s a great question. I myself like the good guys. I would consider the primes great transformers. Optimus is the leader of the primes, so I’d go with that as my choice.”
Sherman went on to say he and Johnson had a couple laughs about the whole thing and ended up doing a commercial together on the theme.
Finally, here’s further injury updates. In addition to running back Marshawn Lynch (hamstring), Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said two other players who came away from last Sunday’s game against Chicago with injuries — defensive tackle Brandon Mebane (groin) and defensive end Demarcus Dobbs (shoulder) — could be game-time decisions for Monday’s game against Detroit. Carroll was less optimistic about the likelihood cornerback Tharold Simon (toe) and free safety Steven Terrell (hip flexor), who both missed Sunday’s game because of injury, would be able to play Monday.
