There’s only a week or so left in the Lake Stevens kokanee season before the fish swing into full spawning mode, according to Greg Rockenbach at Greg’s Custom Rods &Tackle in Lake Stevens. A fisherman last week checked in with a limit, and only one fish was colored, Rockenbach said. Cooler temperatures have brought the fish up to the 35- to 45-foot range.
Kokanee are running a little smaller than the past couple years, averaging maybe 14 inches, but nice, fat fish. Pull a Dick Nite spoon or a small dodger with a Wedding Ring spinner tipped with a kernel of white corn. Marinating the corn in Pro Cure’s “Bloody Tuna” oil really ups your odds, according to Marci Rockenbach, the co-owner of Greg’s Custom Rods &Tackle.
Lake Cavanaugh also is producing kokanee to 13 inches or so, along with smallish cutthroat. Troll a small Dick Nite in red/orange and chartreuse, or a string of small blades with a snelled bait hook and a piece of nightcrawler. Put a quarter-ounce slip sinker above the swivel on both rigs.
The best area has been the middle of the lake, up toward the islands on the lake’s northwest end.
