I wish to thank the young musicians who gave a concert at the Richmond Beach Congregational Church to benefit a new branch of “Mary’s Place,” which provides many programs and shelter for homeless women and children. Many of these performers are members of the Seattle Symphony and the excellence of this concert showed great skill and preparation. They gave a piano trio by Shostakovich and a string quarter by Mendelssohn, which made for a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
When I inquired as to any compensation for all this work, the violinist advised that this was done “just because we want to.” I feel grateful not only for the splendid music, the good cause, but also the generous spirit of these young people, which inspired me like sunshine on these dark days that cloud the daily news.
