SEATTLE — Seattle officials plan to take over and expand an underused bike share program, with the hope that broader coverage will make it more useful.
The Seattle Times reported that city transportation director Scott Kubly on Friday compared the Pronto Cycle Share network to cellphones: only useful if the network is big.
Mayor Ed Murray included a $5 million city contribution to the program in his budget proposal this week. It would be used buy 2,000 new bicycles to go with a potential $10 million in federal grants for stations and other needs.
Kubly also expects $3 million from sponsorships.
A federal grant request from the city includes a plan to add stations in areas serving higher populations of low-income and minority students.
